Progress for Monday

Over the break I spent my time painting in white behind each character in each drawing so that the characters would not be transparent.

Last week I created a photoshop batch action to take out the background (any white color at all) out of every drawing. Now the backgrounds are transparent and the characters are white.

Just started After Effects to begin the final edit...and found I had some more trouble shooting to do. Should be well underway by tonight.

Sunday 18th progress

#of drawings scanned as of now... 412 there will only be a few more....to be drawn this week. On to editing them here we go!

ProgressII

Also, I am so completely caffeinated that I will be getting all of the scanning done today leaving me a little over a week to photoshop edit these and put them into after effects. I know that it would only take me a couple days to get the editing in After Effects done...I need to get rid of the white behind the character and prop layers though so that viewers can see the background....that is the thing that is causing some problems as of right now....it just takes too long to select the background by hand.

Progress

Just scanned my 300th drawing. Getting closer to the end. Also looking into a good photoshop action to create to make keying out the background automatic for all the drawings without me having to select it manually for each drawing....that would take longer than i have time for. I need ideas for a good action to create that can apply to different drawings...all 400ish of them.

Progress for wednesday the 14th

As of right now I have around 420 drawings. There are a few tweaks I will probably have to redraw before next week. But today I am starting the process of scanning them. We will see how many I can get done in two.5 hours

I will be continuing to scan tonight and tomorrow night

Progress as of Wed. Nov.7th

I am 247 drawings deep into my project. I was thankfully able to use some cycling and I have done aprx. 4-5 drawings for everytime a character is standing still. So those are enabling me to re-use drawings for whatever amount of time I need them. I only need about 50 more drawings so I should be on track to be done with my drawings by friday. I will be scanning the drawings this weekend and Tuesday. I will have them all scanned by the end of next Wednesday as I will be staying on campus all day that day and will not be leaving until they are all scanned and labeled. The following Thurs, Fri, will be dedicated to photoshopping them. Hopefully that will not go into the weekend. I am planning to use the weekend to compose my animation in After Effects. I should be ready with partial animation by the Monday before Thanksgiving break.

Monday Progress

I have been continuing to draw. I hope to be done with the drawing portion by the end of this week or the beginning of next week. I am going to keep drawing every day, with all of my "free-time" until I can complete it. Then I will start to scan the drawings...I suspect that the scanning will take maybe one long day or two days if I break it down a little more. But anyway I am getting closer.

Style choice

Though I have been playing with the "cleaned up" version for my finished style, I want to keep a pencil feel. No ink no inking using photoshop. I will have a cleaner image than the below link, but I love the rough, motion, and raw feel of the pencil. I will darken the existing pencil and take out any lines that overlap or distract. But I will keep much of the pencil shading and only ad digital shading at the end if it flows with the rest of the shading.
Below is what inspires me, the masters in all their glory when they pencil test their characters. Though mine will be more clean, I want to keep the overall feel of this type of style.

AT THIS POINT

I have completed about half of my drawings for my animation. I will continue to draw this week. I do not know how many I have done because I do not number them....I like to work on several different scenes at once and so I have chunks of the scenes.

updated animatic

Why my piece is post modernist

Post modernism is about rejecting traditional views of "fine art". The very medium I use is post modernistic in nature. Animation is often not seen or taught as fine art. There are no history of animation classes offered by the art history department. Though it may come to be more widely accepted as fine art in the future, right now the idea of having a cartoon animation in a gallery with paintings and sculptures is not a traditional idea.

The concept of my piece focuses on language barriers but it illustrates this point in a very post modernistic approach. The characters of my animation are a young business owner and a dead (zombie) man. Traditionally in society, language barriers exist only between cultures. However, my piece goes farther than just a cultural barrier and puts in place the barrier of life and death. My story uses these characters and barriers to explore a real-life issue and puts a comical and light-hearted spin on the topic.

Both the medium and the characters in my piece demonstrate a post modernist way of thinking. There is nothing "traditionally fine-art" about my piece and I believe that that fact only acts to make it stronger.

Storyboard so far...

Progress

This weekend I spent my time creating a detailed storyboard. With the exception of the last few panals it is complete. Today I will spend time drawing the last few and creating a rough animatic.

Updated Contract

I will be creating a 2D traditional animation. I will be hand-drawing each frame and then scanning each picture to digitalize it. After the drawings are digitalized I will be using photoshop to darken the lines and possibly color the scenes. The result will be that each frame is fully digitally colored.

The theme of my piece will be a subtle message of language barriers and how lack of understanding leads to conflicting ideas. I want to play with the idea of fearing the things we do not understand by turning it around to illustrate how we do not understand the things we fear. I will use a simple concept to execute this theme. The scene will open on a small pet shop where a cashier waits at the register. A man walks into the pet shop carrying his pet fish in a bowl. When he approaches the counter the cashier is terrified as she realizes that he is actually dead. She is so scared that she grabs a mop and stands with it, ready to defend herself against the zombie man. When the zombie man sets the fish bowl on the counter the cashier sees that the fish inside is also dead. She drops the mop and just looks at the fish, unsure of what to do. She looks back at the zombie man. He scoots the fish bowl toward the scared cashier. She hesitates and pushes the bowl back toward the zombie man and almost off the counter. The zombie man catches the bowl and, slightly offended; he puts the bowl back on the counter and points to the fish. The cashier is confused and scared and leaves briefly. She returns with a new fish for the zombie, hoping that he will take it and leave. She puts it on the counter and he bends down to inspect the new/ live fish more closely. Meanwhile, the cashier, thinking she has given him what he wants, picks up his dead fish and drops it in the trashcan. The zombie sees this and is horrified that his pet has just been thrown away. He grabs the trash from the cashier and stands glaring at her angrily. Seeing his rage, she closes her eyes and cowers expecting to be eaten…or worse. Then the zombie slams something on the counter. The cashier opens her eyes to see that the zombie has put a container of fish food in front of her. He then slams money down on the counter, picks up the fish food, and stomps out of the store with his pet and its food. The cashier is left to realize that the zombie man only wanted some food for his pet. There will be a concept statement that is included.

The aesthetics will be centered on a cartoony style to keep the subject light and humorous.
My video will have to be played on a television or computer screen. It will be a large format video with animation compression. No floor space required
I will need a DVD player and tv or projection screen (maybe projector)
